Cycling

Cycling and Paros. A relationship doomed to... succeed!

It's no exaggeration to say that the island of Paros offers ideal conditions for cycling enthusiasts. And when we say "ideal conditions", we mean for the fans of all kinds of bicycles and cycling.

Mountain and off road devotees should opt for a mountain bike and follow some of the hiking trails and dirt roads located inland, from Lefkes to Lagada, the monastery of Agion Theodoron and Aspro Chorio, or Christou of Dasous and Kamari. Necessary equipment (apart from the trusty bicycle) includes a bike helmet (full face is best, at least for those wishing to gather speed on downhill slopes) and bike uniform with elbow, shoulder and kneepads (also for speed adventurers). Drinking water is crucial, even in winter, so be sure to bring enough with you. You will also need tools and a repair kit, as the terrain is rocky and rugged. Don't forget food for yourself and your group, as a picnic among the trees and running water is a pleasant stop in the mountains of Paros.

Fans of bicycle racing can take a regional route without great variations in altitude, which are fast. Protective gear and attention to traffic, particularly in summer, are very important, and the narrow roads and blind turns are deceptively dangerous.

The trekking bike, a cross between the mountain and racing bike, is the best choice for excursions and recreation. It features 28-inch wheels and is easier to ride than a mountain bike, has the ability to traverse dirt roads (of which there are many in the north of the island, where the landscape is idyllic) and can go almost as fast as a racing bike. The trekking bike is perfect for touring the island and getting to popular and lesser known beaches and villages such as: Pounta and Marpissa in the east, Naoussa, the environmental park and Santa Maria in the north, Aliki and Lolantoni beach in the south, as well as some uphill routes inland, with asphalt and easy dirt roads towards Lefkes, Marathi, Kostos and the Monastery of Christos of Dasos to see the butterflies.

Bicycles can be rented on the island, either for the day or by the hour. Be sure to choose one that matches your capabilities and requirements. Never set off on a long distance without ensuring that you are fit enough to return. Select a bicycle that suits your height and age (older riders have a shorter span from chest to hands on the bike). For long distances, request a bicycle with raised handlebars that requires less bending over and is easier on the neck. Adjust the seat so your legs are sufficiently stretched when pedaling to avoid knee injuries. Ask for a helmet and tighten it so it fits firmly on your head. Check over the bike, particularly when planning to cycle long distances from the rental shop and far from residential areas.

Observe all traffic and safety regulations and experience Paros in a way that few visitors have the opportunity to enjoy.
